On Saturday 14th October, we were honoured to be a part of the Royal Academy RA250 fundraising campaign by supporting a “Triple Private View” exhibition with our famous mobile tea room – our tea trike. The trike was accompanied by our pop-up tea garden in which guests could sit and relax with a cup of our truly British tea. The urban tea garden was created from bushes brought up from Cornwall, the very leaves from which our pioneering tea is made.
The “After Dark” triple private view was a special edition of three landmark exhibitions all in support of the Royal Academy’s fundraising appeal to complete the largest redevelopment in its history.
The Royal Academy was founded in 1768, making 2018 the year of its 250th anniversary. To celebrate, they have embarked on a major redevelopment that will unite the two buildings, opening up new spaces for exhibitions, learning and debate.
The Triple Private View event, only open to Royal Academy Friends, gave the members the chance to explore artists Matisse, Jasper Johns and Dalí / Duchamp away from the crowds at the exclusive evening event. Friends enjoyed live music, themed food and Tregothnan’s homegrown tea served from our three-wheeled tea tourer.
The Twin Swing duo (pictured here in front of our trike), gave high-energy pop-up performances inspired by the iconic dance moves of 1920s America, accompanied by live music from The Jazzes. Friends were inspired to learn the Charleston alongside the dancing duo and even our Sales Manager, Richard, felt inspired to give it a go!
Dalí / Duchamp – two artistic giants: father of conceptual art Marcel Duchamp, and larger-than-life Surrealist Salvador Dalí. This is the first exhibition to throw light on their surprising relationship and its influence on the work of both artists.
Jasper Johns – Regarded as one of the most important artists of the 20th century, Jasper Johns has remained central to American contemporary art since his arrival in New York in the 1950s.
Matisse in the Studio – Step into the studio of Henri Matisse, brimming with the artist’s treasured objects. Focusing exclusively on their important role in his work for the first time, we will reveal how this eclectic collection took on new life in his transcendent art.
RA250 – Make Your Mark Fundraising Campaign
This event is part of a special series of RA250 events, supporting our fundraising campaign Make Your Mark. Led by the internationally-acclaimed architect David Chipperfield RA and supported by the National Lottery, the project will link Burlington House on Piccadilly and Burlington Gardens for the first time, uniting the two-acre site. You can read more about the new galleries and spaces here.
In 2018, the Royal Academy will launch their new cultural campus that will run all the way from Piccadilly to Mayfair, with new facilities and spaces for the public to enjoy. They will reveal the elements that make the RA unique, sharing with the public the historic treasures in our Collection and the work of their Academicians, as well as providing more space for the RA Schools and learning programme.
