Forestry & Woodlands

The Estate owns throughout Cornwall and Kent a large cross section of woodland which is key to our commitment to reducing the use of fossil fuels and finding greener ways to live.

Our woodland comprises a rich mixture of native broadleaf species, interspersed conifer, internationally important Atlantic oak woodland and one of the largest areas of managed sweet chestnut coppice in Europe.

A forestry management plan is in place and utilises sound silvicultural practice. It creates rotational supplies of timber for renewable energy projects and the Estate’s own charcoal business, providing the UK’s largest source of sustainable charcoal.

A number of long life rotations operate at any one time depending on the species and topography. Activity from these allows fresh light and new glades to form which in turn stimulate a flourishing biodiversity enjoying woodland habitats at various stages of maturity.
