BEEKEEPER

Permanent, Full-time, average of 40 hrs pw

The Role

A rare and fantastic opportunity has arisen for a full-time Beekeeper, to manage an existing collection of 80 hives in Cornwall. Tregothnan is home of the first Manuka outside of New Zealand and has a wealth of flora across locations from the most southerly tip of England (the Lizard) to Tregothnan garden 50 miles to the east.

Our current Beekeeper has improved the hives since 2019 and is now returning to Australia. Given the extraordinary botanical flora at Tregothnan and the pioneering of Manuka since the 1880’s, this role is particularly suited to a Beekeeper who has experience in New Zealand or Australia. The emphasis is on bee welfare and top-quality honey production, following sustainable commercial practices.

Duties include:

  • Routine inspection of colonies in central Cornwall.
  • Harvesting, extraction and jarring of honey.
  • Identifying and treating hives for pests and diseases.
  • Swam catching and baiting across the estate.
  • Running beginners Beekeeping workshops.
  • Queen rearing to sustain honey production colonies.
  • Hive maintenance, repair and construction.
  • Apiary maintenance.
  • Honey deliveries.
About You

You will need:

  • Previous experience of managing bee hives on a large scale.
  • Previous experience of harvesting honey.
  • Basic IT skills.
  • The ability to work alone and as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills, professional attitude, polite and good levels of personal presentation.
  • Full UK driving licence. A work vehicle is provided.

TEA GROWER / TEA KEEPER

Permanent, Full-time, 40 hrs pw, Mon-Fri

The Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Tea Grower/Tea Keeper, who will be responsible for planting, managing and cultivating tea plants on the Estate.

You will be part of the high-profile success of the first tea grown in England by growing and harvesting Europe’s largest tea garden, managing efficient and environmentally friendly production.

About You

You will need:

  • To be highly experienced in large scale growing horticulture/agriculture, preferably with knowledge of the Cornish climate and the impact this has; and have knowledge of best practice in agricultural and horticultural enterprises.
  • Expertise in plant care, soil science and shrub management, which could have been gained as a Nursery Manager or Assistant Nursery Manager.
  • To be very proficient in operating and maintaining machinery, e.g., tractor, brush cutter, etc.
  • Basic IT skills.
  • The ability to work alone and as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills, professional attitude, polite and good levels of personal presentation.
  • Full UK driving licence and own transport, as we are in a rural location with no access to public transport.

BENCH JOINER

Permanent, full-time, 39 hrs pw, Mon-Thu 7.30am-4.00pm, Fri 7.30am-3.00pm

The Role

You will mainly be based in the well-equipped Joinery workshop, but will also carry out on-site fitting. The Joinery produced is to a very high standard, using quality timber, fittings and finishes. The role is responsible for all aspects of joinery for the Tregothnan Estate, but is mainly focused on making and fitting doors and windows.

Duties include:

  • Reading drawings
  • Producing workshop rods
  • Setting out own work and producing cutting lists.
  • Producing high quality work, with accuracy and economical use of materials.
  • Competently fit and adjust a range of ironmongery and fittings, different types of glazing and apply a range of brush finishes.

About You

You will need:

  • Joinery experience, specifically making doors and windows, preferably with an NVQ Level 3 in Bench Joinery, Carpentry and Joinery or equivalent.
  • To be competent in all aspects of Joinery.
  • To be highly skilled with hand tools.
  • To be competent in operating workshop machinery and power tools.
  • A positive attitude, a willingness to learn, to be a flexible team member and able to adapt to change.
  • A full UK driving licence and own transport, as we are in a rural location, with no access to public transport.

WOODSPRSON

Permanent, full-time, 40 hrs pw, Mon-Fri, 7.45am-4.15pm

The Role

This is a great opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic Woodsperson, who wants to reach their full potential, at a very exciting time in the history of woodland management of the Estate. The work is varied and covers all aspects of woodland operations from planting, maintenance and establishment, to thinning and small-scale harvesting, in predominantly broadleaf woodland.

About You

You will need:

  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience in woodland management.
  • The ability to demonstrate a wide range of silvicultural (the growing and cultivation of trees) skills and knowledge.
  • A full UK driving licence and own transport, as we are in a rural location, with no access to public transport.
