Boost your Vitamin D with nettles

At this time of year, at the end of our British Winter, you are probably sneezing and coughing through your fifth or sixth cold of the season. Today, the authors of a major global study say increasing your daily intake of vitamin D would reduce the risk of colds, flu and other dangerous infections such as pneumonia.

During the winter we absorb such low levels of the so-called “sunshine vitamin” in the UK that we are recommend to include supplements in our diet. Rather than just taking pills, we have the answer in the form of our super healthy Nettle infusion. Plant foods generally do not contain any vitamin D with the only exceptions being nettles.

Ask a medical herbalist which herbal infusion they would take if they were to be stranded on a desert island (along with a kettle and a mug) and many would go straight for Nettle. One of the oldest and most popular of all herbal tisanes, it is considered the healthiest tea of all. It is full of nutrients including vitamin A and C, D, zinc, iron, potassium, calcium, magnesium and silica. Aside from being an all-round blood tonic, its excellent anti-histamine properties make it ideal for hay-fever sufferers. It is also commonly used for rheumatism relief or as a detoxifier to remove impurities from the body.
