Tregothnan is recognised as a Centrica Top 100 Apprenticeship Employer
We are delighted to announce that we have been recognised in the prestigious Centrica Top 100 Apprenticeship Employer list. The list is compiled annually by the National Apprenticeship Service and recognises excellence in businesses that employ apprentices. The list was announced at the National Apprenticeship Awards which took place on 18 January at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.
Claire Scholes, director of our apprenticeship programme commented: “This is great recognition for the hard work that both apprentices and individual mentors and managers put into our scheme. We hope that the listing will allow us to attract more applicants to our future roles and highlight the range of apprenticeships we offer.”
Tregothnan began an Apprenticeship Scheme in 2015, welcoming apprentices in its Joinery, Horticulture and Forestry departments. Following this first intake of apprentices, Tregothnan was awarded the Truro and Penwith College SME Cornwall Apprentice Employer of the Year for the diversity of their scheme along with the additional training resources provided to skill their apprentices.
In 2016, following the first successful year in the Apprenticeship Scheme, we created roles for apprentices in the IT team and then later, in early 2017, roles for three apprentices within the Marketing and Accounts teams.
Marketing Manager, Annabel Percy-Hughes, commented “I am so proud of my apprentices, Jack and Maddie, who have become an indispensable part of my team. They have learnt so much and gained experience which will be invaluable to the progression of their careers. They bring energy, talent and enthusiasm to every project so I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the Apprenticeship Scheme to any employer.”
At the Truro and Penwith College awards at the end of 2017 we celebrated once again with Maddie Murphy being nominated in the Marketing Apprentice of the Year category and Daniel Cannons winning the award for IT Apprentice of the Year.
The apprentices have created a lasting impact at Tregothnan, using their newly gained expertise to complete high profile projects like the creation of new tea packaging, releasing a new website and highly skilled work including forestry management, planting a National Collection of Camellia reticulata and designing hot boxes to dry large quantities of Tregothnan’s homegrown tea leaves.
Marketing Apprentice Jack Hopkins commented “I have been given the opportunity to work with film crews, journalists and visitors to the Estate, showing them around the gardens and tea plantations. Getting opportunities like this has not only helped me to feel a trusted member of the team but also helped build my confidence in dealing with the public and improved my customer service and communication skills.”
Each new intake of apprentices began with an open afternoon at the Tregothnan Estate to help gain knowledge of how a living estate like Tregothnan works. Applicants to Tregothnan’s Apprenticeship Scheme had the chance to meet their prospective managers, take a tour of Tregothnan’s famous botanical garden and tea plantations and talk to teams across the Estate about their own experiences of working for Tregothnan.
2018 will see new Apprenticeship roles within Forestry, Horticulture and Joinery again, engaging the skills and knowledge of the first apprentices to help guide the new candidates through the start of their careers.
Sue Husband, Director of the National Apprenticeship Service, commented on Tregothnan being named a Centrica Top 100 Apprenticeship Employer: “I hope the success of these Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers will mean more businesses across England aspire to follow their example and to find out for themselves how apprenticeships help to grow a skilled and highly qualified workforce.”
Tregothnan will also be stepping into new territory in 2018 with higher level apprenticeships for current employees. Through the higher level programme, Tregothnan will look to engage current employees into degree level qualifications for staff who want to develop their careers.
