Discover Tregothnan’s Botanic Garden

Come and discover the most spectacular private botanical gardens in Cornwall at the largest charity garden open event in the UK. Tregothnan will open it’s usually private gardens to the public for one weekend only on April 22nd and 23rd 2017 and all the proceeds go to the St. Petroc’s Society, a charity dedicated to supporting Cornwall’s homeless people.

The Tregothnan garden is the largest private botanical garden in Cornwall and has an unrivalled collection of rare plants and trees. The plants have been collected over many centuries of careful design; thousands of rare species sailed from overseas to be nurtured for the first time on British soil in the Tregothnan garden.

Bring your whole family to enjoy a fascinating day out at the first ever tea plantation in the UK. Tregothnan is the home of British tea and the bushes which create Britain’s number one drink flourish in the Tregothnan garden in the warmth of it’s microclimate. The Boscawen family who have lived at Tregothnan since 1334 have created a unique botanical garden in Cornwall with a collection of plants no one believed could be grown in the UK.

Our dedicated garden team at Tregothnan spend months preparing for this annual private garden open charity celebration; pruning the record-breaking Camellia Maze, perfecting the magical ‘Himalayan Valley’ with its beautiful tea pagoda, planting new and mysterious trees and shrubs and mowing the acres of pristine lawns and pathways of the Tregothnan garden.

This year however, the team have been given a little more work to do, as the Camellia maze which grows in botanical garden has been given a facelift this month by the local Cornish deer inhabiting the Tregothnan deer park. Tregothnan’s Head Gardener, Neil Bennett, is less than impressed with the remodelling of the maze. “We know that the Camellia bushes which create the walls of the maze in the Tregothnan Garden are the deer’s idea of a delicious treat, but we just wish they would learn the way out, instead of creating a new one.”

These creative mammals have reportedly rerouted the puzzling pathway for the maze’s visitors, by munching through the Camellia hedgerows which make up the walls of the maze. With so much work still to do to prepare for the charity private garden open weekend of Cornwall’s most exquisite botanical garden, it could be that our thousands of visitors to the Tregothnan Camellia maze over the weekend will be getting lost in a maze designed by hungry deer with a penchant for puzzles.

Spring always appears early at Tregothnan, which means Cornwall’s most exclusive botanical garden plays host to some of Spring’s first fabulous Camellias, Rhododendrons and Magnolias as they respond to the warm weather and open in an explosion of colour across the private garden. Visitors to Tregothnan’s charity open garden weekend marvel at the scale of these show-stopping shrubs and breath-taking vistas across the valley which creates the Himalayan style environment in which they flourish.

After the secluded beauty of the botanical garden, visitors can take on the tea party atmosphere in the Tregothnan stable yard where we will be serving Cornish cream teas with Tregothnan tea and Kea plum jam and hot and cold food and refreshments throughout the day. Musical entertainment, children’s activities, games and demonstrations are also sure to keep visitors entertained throughout the private garden open weekend. Entry is free for children aged 16 and under, encouraging families to enjoy the adventure of Cornwall’s finest botanical garden.
