Happy Birthday Earl Grey

Happy Birthday Earl Grey! Today marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Charles Grey, who lends his name to the iconic Earl Grey tea.

The Story Behind The Tea

Earl Grey tea is a tea blend with a distinctive smoky flavour and aroma derived from the addition of rind of the bergamot orange, a fragrant citrus fruit. According to the Grey family, the tea was specially blended by a Chinese mandarin for Lord Grey, to suit the water at the Northumberland estate where he lived, to offset the preponderance of lime in the local water. One legend says that it was a grateful Chinese mandarin (whose son was rescued from drowning by one of Lord Grey’s men) who first presented the blend to the Earl in 1803.

Tregothnan Earl Grey

Tregothnan’s owners are direct descendants of the Earl, and our premium blend aims to be the ultimate tribute to the man himself. As tea blogger Geoffrey Norman recently said, our brew is “the most British Earl Grey…Ever.”
