Smugglers and The Tea Bar has a makeover

10th February 2012

Smugglers will be re-opening for Mother’s Day and will be looking better than ever thanks to an epic re-thatching of its roof by local company Greystone Moore. Based in Helston, Guy Moore and his team are master thatchers, having worked on rebuilding Pandora Inn after it was destroyed by fire last year. A hefty two week job on Smugglers has restored it to its former glory – an essential and worthwhile job on the 13th century thatched cottage. Despite the recent frosty conditions, the workmen have been greeted by perfect sunshine which has lasted most days throughout the project. One of the thatching team said: “Even though it’s been cold recently, the days are thankfully staying lighter for longer, and it really is a lovely spot down here on the River Fal.”

A date for everybody’s diary and a chance to see the new restoration work will be Sunday 18th March. Special earlybird deals include a 2 course meal for £15.95 and a 3 course meal for £19.95, from 12pm - 4pm. Smugglers’ Manager Joss said: “Our menu is sure to delight visitors on Mother’s Day, with as many ingredients as possilbe sourced from Tregothnan estate and surrounding farms. A medley of indulgences will include starters such as courgette and mint soup, sage and pancetta pigeon breast, and baked goats cheese with pine nut crust, and for main courses you can try crisp cider braised pork belly with mustard cabbage and apple mash, butternut squash with parmesan and sage risotto, traditional roast beef with all the trimmings, or spinach and feta stuffed chicken with sauteed new potatoes and herb oil. Our pudding choices are an overload of treats such as bread and butter pudding with vanilla custard and ice cream, chocolate nemesis tart with clotted cream, plus sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and honeycomb ice cream. Spaces are limited so we are encouraging people to book early to avoid disappointment.”

Also on the menu from 2pm – 5pm will be extravagant Cream Teas, with freshly baked scones, rare Kea plum jam created at Tregothnan, Cornish clotted cream and a range of Tregothnan teas, for £7.95 per person. A beautiful posy of seasonal British flowers grown on Tregothnan estate can be added for £15 extra.

Exciting New Competition:

WIN a large Bulk Bag (1.6m3) of kiln dried logs worth £226 and delivered to your home.

Certainly Wood is the UK’s largest specialist supplier of British kiln dried logs and whilst we do produce our own seasoned logs for local supply in Cornwall and Kent, we are working with Certainly Wood to encourage you to stock up with premium quality kiln dried logs. We believe it is vital that whilst you enjoy your English grown tea from Tregothnan, you should snuggle up around a cosy log fire for the ultimate comfort.

Just answer the following question to win:

Why are kiln dried logs so much better for your wood burning stove than poorly seasoned wood? (Hint: you'll find the answer on Certainly Wood's website)

a) They burn faster

b) They burn with more heat, provide a clean burn and mean you need fewer logs

c) They can cause a build-up of soot and tar in your chimney

Answer, a, b or c

How did the Christmas Tree cross the river?

6th December 2011

Our raft of canoes was very slick at riding through the water. Luckily the river was wonderfully calm and there was only one short sharp shower on such a sunny day. Thanks to our friends at Canoe Cornwall and Trelissick Gardens for a great time! Watch this space for next year's Christmas Tree delivery...

Trelissick’s tree to be delivered by raft…

2nd December 2011

This Monday 5th December, the team at Tregothnan will join forces with Canoe Cornwall and The National Trust to deliver a lovely 25 foot fir tree to Trelissick Gardens by raft.

At 10am on the estate, we will be building an enormous raft big enough to paddle the tree from the Tregothnan Quay to Roundwood Quay at Trelissick.

Once it’s finally in place, on Friday 9th December at 5pm, the tree lights will be officially switched on by Children’s Hospice South West Community Fundraiser Mary Murfin.

Photos to follow next week!

A big welcome to our new General Manager!

28th November 2011

This week Andy Phillips joins Tregothnan as General Manager of our commercial operations.

Andy has spent five years managing the successful Roskilly’s ice-cream business, helping diversify into confectionary and retail operations. Andy is looking forward to the challenges of strong growth at Tregothnan both in the UK and overseas.

Jonathon Jones, Commercial and Garden Director, explained that establishing a fast growing brand with a 700 year old history with its headquarters in Cornwall calls for ‘special skills.’ He said: ‘Andy will greatly strengthen the commercial team and improve efficiency. These are exciting times for fine British brands like Tregothnan experiencing rapid growth in spite of general economic gloom’.

This is a new job directly thanks to the policy of The Honourable Evelyn Boscawen who always says “to take the product to the market and not wait for the market to come to Cornwall”. Even so, few expected Cornwall to be exporting tea to China, or for Darjeeling to be twinned with Tregothnan in 2012.

Debbie Kitchen, Sales Manager, said: ‘Andy won't know what’s hit him as he joins in the middle of our Christmas rush, as the estate is open every day for Christmas tree sales. Record orders are coming in for flower bouquets for nationwide delivery, and internet orders from Australia and USA for tea come in overnight’.

Our whopping Christmas Tree!

25th November 2011

Tis the season! Our biggest Christmas tree yet, a 40 foot beauty, has just been cut down and transported to Camborne for their town square...

Smugglers - one of the best!

25th November 2011

Our stunning Smugglers at Tolverne has recently been voted as one of the six best tea rooms in the UK by Red Online.

Described as 'a wonderfully informal affair,' Sara D'souza writes: 'It's almost like having a friend round for a relaxed cuppa. Except here, you can overlook the babbling, camellia-strewn River Fal with a fine cup of English tea, some freshly baked scones, a pot of Tregothnan Kea plum jam and some Cornish clotted cream.'

We are offering you the opportunity to reserve Smugglers for private parties until April, when the cottage will re-open daily for the summer season. To book, please call Joss on 01872 580309 or email jbelcher@tregothnan.com.

Or, if you're feeling peckish and fancy an early Christmas treat, why not order a Cream Tea by Post, which can be sent to you today? Delicious!

A busy week….

25th November 2011

There has been a lot of hype in the press this week about the UK's mild winter and why it is perfect for Tregothnan's tea plantations. On Tuesday we were visited by the ITV News team, who learnt that we are still tea picking when normally the season draws to a close early in October. You can view the coverage here.

The Daily Express, the Cornish Guardian, and the Western Morning News also covered this exciting news story.

On the box, we were featured on Daybreak's weather on Wednesday morning and on Frank Skinner's Opinionated last night.

Jonathan Jones, our Commercial and Garden Director, expects to harvest more than ten tonnes this year, compared to the previous annual record of seven.

He said: "It's been an incredible year for us and I'm absolutely amazed we're still producing. We're heading for a record year for sure. It's almost become an annual growing season. It started very early in April due to early warm weather in spring and we've just seen the perfect storm of conditions since. Summer was warm and wet – which mirrors the Indian climate where tea is traditionally grown – and we've seen an incredibly warm autumn. It's unheard of for us to be picking leaves in November, and the way things are heading we could find ourselves picking them for a few weeks yet."

Let's hope the sun will still continue to shine - our tea is loving it!

Tregothnan’s twin, Darjeeling, in 1947

23rd November 2011

William Bell from Brixham, Devon, was recently inspired to send us these wonderful nostalgic photographs after reading about our proposed twinning with Darjeeling published in The Times. He writes: “I hope these two images will be of interest: one of Darjeeling’s tea pickers, the other of the railway which comes from its highest mountain point to Darjeeling station. As a soldier in 1947 I was stationed at ‘Lebong’ about two miles further on from the town. We could step out of our barrack room right onto the tea shrubs. The first picture was taken by one of my mates and shows the third highest mountain and clouds below - it was a marvellous sight. I heard that the rail line no longer exists due to a landslide. My best wishes in your venture with Darjeeling.”

Christmas Tree Experience & Cabin now open!

15th November 2011

Tregothnan’s famous Christmas Tree Experience is now open during the week on the estate from 8am – 6pm. A wonderful family day out, the free-entry event offers visitors the opportunity to select, cut, or dig their own conifer from a wide choice of non-drop varieties through to the traditional Norway spruce, which grows up to 40 foot long on the estate’s fertile land.

Although Tregothnan is a private working estate, with the largest historic gardens in Cornwall, this unusual festive event is a great chance to explore the large expanse of woodland and to select your perfect tree. We can provide equipment if required or please feel free to bring your own.

Our Christmas Cabin is also now open on weekdays for perfect seasonal gifts and products including Tregothnan teas, herbal infusions, hampers, biscuits, chinaware, wreaths, garlands, bouquets, firewood, charcoal, and preserves

To accompany your chosen Christmas tree, rustic cast iron tree stands are available to purchase too.

We will also be open on the following weekends in December:

Darjeeling to be twinned with Tregothnan!

14th November 2011

Our exciting update on the world first:

Warm October nights have helped to create a fine autumn flush of tea at Tregothnan. The UK's only tea plantation is located in the favoured Cornish climate and benefits from its far south-west setting in the Gulf Stream. Deep Himalayan-style valleys seven miles from the sea are at the heart of our estate and are perfect for the finest brew. These conditions are almost unique but not quite – Darjeeling in far north India also has valleys, mists and, of course, tea.

Tregothnan’s Garden Director, Jonathon Jones, compares this winter so far to those described by a gardener in the 1830s who said that the Cornish winter was actually ‘a languid spring’. If we have a cold season as the doom-mongers predict, we will have Japanese style tea where the tea lies dormant under a layer of snow for a short time. More likely we will have Darjeeling style tea where snow is very rare although the snow-capped Himalayas are in view. Warm nights and dewy mornings have created the perfect conditions for tea harvesting.

England’s very own tea estate has been recognised by the Confederation of Indian Industry’s delegation, who has proposed that Darjeeling is twinned with Tregothnan. This extraordinary development recognises over two centuries of pioneering work with camellia, the source of tea, across the estate’s vast acreage in Cornwall. Tregothnan has a climate with uncanny similarities to its proposed twin; both Darjeeling and Tregothnan grow enormous rhododendrons and magnolias as well as the tea genus. Tregothnan actually grew camellias at least 50 years before Darjeeling but mainly for ornamental and botanical purposes.

Meanwhile, Darjeeling has become the world’s finest ‘champagne of tea’ and the city of Darjeeling is one of the most beautiful hill stations in India. As Tregothnan’s ‘Himalayan’ valleys appealed so much to a visiting delegation from the Indian Chamber of Commerce and its tea specialists, an invitation to twin with the world’s pre-eminent tea city was proposed. Reciprocal visits are being arranged with Tregothnan’s Jonathon Jones being invited to address a special forum on 17th December in Calcutta. The formal twinning will be arranged in 2012 and is due to be attended by The Honourable Evelyn Boscawen whose family seat is at Tregothnan continuously since 1335.

Jonathon Jones said: ‘This exciting twinning will help us exchange PhD students and collaborate on research projects. There is so much good in tea that isn’t yet known. This is wonderful news for India and the UK – two great tea drinking nations. We could do with some help processing our leaves as well!’

The economic benefits of collaboration are significant. Darjeeling is a cool climate retreat where the British escaped from the heat of Calcutta. As Ramgopal Agarwal, the Chairman of the Bengal branch of the Confederation of Indian Industry, stated: ‘Tregothnan is an innovative estate on such a scale that we feel it is a tremendous opportunity for both the Bengal region in India and Cornwall in England to really join forces and increase tea tourism. Tea is the world’s number one drink and yet is not well understood. What Tregothnan can do in Europe will really open up the possibilities, awareness, and benefits of this ancient beverage.’

Friendly rivalry between Tregothnan and Darjeeling stretches back over many years with frequent checks in January and February to see who first gets its famous Magnolia campbellii into flower. The magnificent large pink blooms are sometimes an indicator of a good spring flush of tea, especially if they appear in March. There is a real sense already of the twinning, with knowledge of what is happening in Darjeeling.

A special conference has been called for 17th-19th December in Bengal to discuss Tea tourism at The Indian Tea Forum. Tregothnan is to be represented either in person or via video link. For a quicker paced liaison with the twinned locations, it is believed that Tregothnan will be the first tea estate in the world to receive superfast broadband in 2012.

Tregothnan Charity Garden Open Weekend a great success!

31st March 2011

The sun shone, and the people came out in droves. It could only be our annual charity fundraiser...

And what a weekend it was! With all proceeds benefitting local Cornish charity The Cornwall Community Foundation there was something for the whole family to enjoy as they strolled through acres of glorious botanical gardens. The ponds beyond Himalayan Valley were a particularly popular spot, due in no small part to the unseasonably (and un-forcast!) warm weather.
Following our New Year Flower Count that saw us start the year with the fewest flowering species in living memory, our famous Camellias, Magnolias and Rhododendrons didn't let us down when it mattered and provided a spectacular display of colour. Of course there was only one fitting reward after a long stroll through the gardens, and that was a delicious cream tea or homebaked pasty in the historic clock tower. Divine! See Tregothnan on Flickr for some shots of the garden, or send your own images to: rachel@tregothnan.com
Thank you to all our garden guests, volunteers and to Atlantic FM who covered the whole event. We hope you enjoyed the weekend as much as we did and we look forward to seeing you at next year's event.
Stay updated with events including early-bird ticket offers by signing up to our newsletter, and texting TEA to 64446
